Judicial hopefuls treading the line

Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge Paul P. Panepinto, who is seeking the GOP nomination for a seat on the state Supreme Court, has gotten some significant support from Texas lawyers.

A Houston law firm that represented two women in a 2005 case here before Panepinto donated $50,000 to his campaign. Five other Texas lawyers or firms gave another $100,000, meaning that more than half of his campaign bankroll during the first months of the race came from the Lone Star state.

State Superior Court Judge Seamus P. McCaffery, a Democratic high court contender, is getting key labor support. His campaign recently got a giant $50,000 check from John "Johnny Doc" Dougherty's Local 98 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - with a promise of $100,000 more.

Such contributions highlight the frantic race for money in the primary battle for two seats on the state's highest court - and underscore concerns that some donations might also be seen as an effort to curry favor with a judge.

Howard K. Stern Files Defamation Lawsuit Against Virgie Arthur's ...

Anna Nicole Smith's companion Howard K. Stern has started his defamation war against those he claims libeled him publicly in the past year - and Virgie Arthur's lawyer is his first target.

Stern's high-powered attorney L. Lin Wood filed a defamation lawsuit yesterday in Florida against John O'Quinn on behalf of his client.

The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages for claims of slander and invasion of privacy, and focuses on statements O'Quinn made during recent public appearances.

State park wondrous, but not one of 7 Wonders

The state Bureau of Tourism will announce winners of its "Seven Wonders of Illinois" today, but the Wildlife Prairie State Park did not make the final cut.

The park was a finalist for the western region's nomination, but Black Hawk State Historic Site tallied more votes. Seven different regional winners comprised the Seven Wonders of Illinois list.

Even though the park couldn't take home top honors for the western region, park manager Linda Prescott took solace in the celebrity the park had gained because of the competition.

The park boasts 2,000 acres packed with wolves, bison, elk, otters, cougars and more.

Prescott said many people from outside of the area had called and planned a visit after seeing Wildlife Prairie State Park on the Seven Wonders Web site.
