Oklahomans To Get Free Legal Advice

Oklahomans can get free legal advice Tuesday as part of a statewide celebration of law and the legal system.LeFlore County lawyers will be staffing phone lines from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday for people to call in and ask "any legal question, anything that's on their mind," according to LeFlore County Bar President Michael Dunagan. He said anywhere from six to 12 lawyers will be stationed at Legal Services of Eastern Oklahoma in Poteau and will be ready to consult each other if necessary."If a lawyer happens to answer the phone if (the caller) asks a question that one lawyer there might have more knowledge, we can pass the phone around," Dunagan said.Television station OETA also will air an hourlong "Ask the Lawyer" segment featuring questions from callers to a statewide line. The segment will air at 7 p.m., which is when Dunagan said the local phone lines usually get busiest.

Chamber Reacts to Gov. Henry's Veto of Tort Reform

The Oklahoma State Chamber has forwarded its response to Governor Brad Henry's veto of SB507, the civil justice reform package. (Previous posts here and here.) The Chamber's statement:Oklahoma's business community is extremely disappointed in Governor Henry's veto of lawsuit reform. "Even though small business owners and large Oklahoma corporate citizens came together in their effort to communicate the importance of his signing of the lawsuit reform elements he himself called for, the plain fact is that he chose to listen to his trial lawyer friends," said Mike Seney, senior vice president of operations for The State Chamber. “This is not the last lawsuit reform bill that will be put on the governor's desk. We hope that he will eventually realize the frustration Oklahomans have with our current system."

RIAA Security Expert's Quest For Reliability

NewYorkCountryLawyer asks: "In UMG v. Lindor, the RIAA has submitted an 'expert' report (pdf) and 26-page curriculum vitae (pdf), prepared by Dr. Doug Jacobson of Iowa State University who is the RIAA's expert witness in all of its cases against consumers, relating to alleged copyright infringement by means of a shared files folder on Kazaa, and supposed analysis of the hard drive of a computer in Ms. Lindor's apartment. The RIAA's 'experts' have been shut down in the Netherlands and Canada, having been shown by Prof. Sips and Dr. Pouwelse of Delft University's Parallel and Distributed Systems research group (pdf) to have failed to do their homework, but are still operating in the USA. The materials were submitted in connection with a motion to compel Ms. Lindor's son, who lives 4 miles away from her, to turn over his computer and music listening devices to the RIAA.
